Health Information for dogs
First I would like to say that I am not a Vet. Please take this information and study it first before using any info on your dogs or puppies. You can google.com or yahoo.com or even ask your Vet for more info. But please note some Vets will advise you not to go this way. I think because this will take money from them but will safe you money and still have a healthy and happy dog/puppy. I am a breeder that uses like many breeders do and have no problems with using the following info.

Heartworm prevention information
Heartworms have been the leading cause of death for many dogs that have been exposed to mosquitos that transmits this deadly disease. Most heart worm preventatives are costly and now that most states require a yearly test for heart worms before giving the meds for heart worms which add more money to make sure your dog will not have heart worms even if your dog or dogs have been on a heart worm preventative program for years, they will require the test. All this is very costly and burdensome for the dog oweners. Before using any heart worm prevention, please have your dog tested for heartworms if he/she has not been on any type of heart worm prevention meds.

Ivermectin ..The wonder drug of veterinarins in the 80's and 90's.. It is the most widely used wormer for horses, cattle, swine and made it's way into the dog's world and has made hearworms a thing of the past. In 1986, Merck & Co. introduced HeartGard Tablets which were first FDA approved drug that had Ivervectin for the prevention of HeartWorms for dogs. But many years before this kennel owners had been using Ivermectin in their kennels as a heartworm preventative on dogs. Many horse, cattle and swine farms have found that the large animal wormers contain the same ingredients as as most dog wormers and can be given safetly as a substitued wormers for thier dogs at a fraction of the cost of dog wormers. One of the most common ones are the Strongid Paste for horse wormers instead of Nemex or Nemex2 or Evict for hookworms and roundworms. All the wormers contain pyrantel pamoate but the ones for just dogs cost about ten times more than the horse wormers. Ivomec 1% ivermectin in the proper dose could be used as a once a month in dogs as a prevent for heartworms in dogs. Many veterinarians were dispensing Iovmec to their patients before HearGard.. But now that HeartGard was approved by the FDA most if not all vets will not longer dispense Iovmec and being Iovmec is not approved for use in dogs, the dog oweners will assme all risk in using it, but for many years kennel owners have been using it. PLEASE NOTE THAT IVOMEC ON COLLIES CAN BE HARMFUL SO PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR VET BEFORE USING IVOMEC ON YOUR COLLIES. Other breeds of dogs have never had any problems with Ivomec. HeartGard, is a great heartworm prevention for dogs but the only problem is the price and that you need to have your dog tested every year and the cost to make sure your dog is heartworm free. Ivomec is available with out prescription. You can find Ivomec at cattle/horse feed stores. Ivomec it highly concentrated and must be diluted to administer correctly the small amount to a dog for hearworm prevention. To dilute it with one cc of injectable 1% cattle Ivomec with 19 cc of propylene glycol. both ingredients are found at most cattle/horse feed stores. Some will say you can mix Iovmec with water or soda but they will not mix properly and you will not be able to administer the correct dosage. Most kennel owners have been given the mixed one cc per 40lbs dog once a month for heartworm prevention. A 20lbs dog would get 1/2 of a cc and 10lbs would get 1/4 of a cc. Please make sure you shake well before giving your dog and that he/she does not cough it out. This is the doses I have used for years on my dogs and have never had any heartworms in my dogs.. Please do you math before using my doses.. 10/10 = 1 cc for 40lbs 05/10 = 1/2 cc for 20lbs .25/10 = 1/4 cc for 10lbs .125/10 = 1/8 cc for 5lbs .0625/10 = (math sucks) for 2.5lbs You can use chart to find out what a larger dog will need, like our Naia Hannah @ 101lbs..would get 2.5 cc and King @ 4.5lbs would get .125/10 cc..

How to treat for other worms
The cost to keep worm infestations out of your dogs may end up a lot of money if you take your dog to a vet or even if you buy from Wal Mart. I think you can safe a lot of money just by going to your feed store or going on line.
What I use is very inexpensive and a all around deworming treatment. Fenbendazole 10% it is 100% effective against all four types of canine intestinal worms. If you would by deworming medications just for deworming dogs you would be paying a lot more for them. So instead of buying dog/puppy deworming medications you can use Safe-Guard 10% suspension horse/cattle dewormer. You can use this on puppies that are 2 weeks or older dogs. You should deworm your dogs every month to keep them free of worm infestations. If you only have one dog you could share with friends the cost to buy a 1000 ml bottle that contains 100 mg per ml of the active ingredient of Fenbendazole. This is cheaper to buy on a yearly basis than any deworming medication. When you buy the dog/puppy deworming medications from Wal Mart they only treat for two may be three canine intestinal worms, so you would have to buy two types of deworming medications to do the same as buying Safe-Guard 10% suspension horse/cattle dewormer which is effective against all four types of intestinal worms.
Recommended dosage of Safe-Guard 10% Suspension(Fenbendazole) strength is 1ml which contains 100mg active ingredient per 5lbs of dog body weight. For example: 25lbs dog would receive 5ml per day for 3 days a total 3 day treatment of 15 ml. Fenbendazole is always given in three days rather than one day for adult dogs. For puppies I deworm at 2,3, 4, 6 weeks with Safe-Guard and have vet when getting their health check up at 8 weeks. I deworm my dogs around the 15th of the month and heart worm preventative on the 1st of the month. Fenbendazole - Safe Guard 10% is the same as Panacur which is one of the safest dewormers on the market today. No fasting is required and it is safe during pregnancy and lactation. Don't wait till you see worms in your dog's feces before treating them. It's better to treat and keep them worm free before they have them. If you are a breeder you should deworm before you breed her and during the last two weeks before she has her pups. Also deworm her each time you deworm your pups at 2,3,6 and 8 weeks. This will even treat and prevent giardiasis.
